"Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school” Albert Einstein Graham Gamble, Director
Welcome to our website. Presumably you are looking here either out of curiosity, or, more likely, because you are interested in our school for your child. In either case, I am delighted; I hope that what we have presented here gives you a flavor of what makes the education at our institution special and unforgettable (all due respect to Mr. Einstein).
If you are (or are about to be) an expatriate family in the Rotterdam area, you will be looking for a school where your child will feel safe, happy and welcome. For only in those circumstances can your child learn and make great academic progress. Our school will meet your needs. Our modern, bright, well-equipped and attractive premises are situated in the quiet streets of Hillegersberg, an exclusive suburb on the outskirts of Rotterdam. Our teaching and administrative staff, recruited mainly from the United States and other English-speaking countries are highly-qualified and experienced at dealing with the challenges of transition from one culture to another. Your child will also feel welcome amongst a small, friendly, yet truly international community of young learners from over thirty different nations. English is our language of instruction but we welcome and support those for whom English is not a mother tongue.
If you are only in this part of the Netherlands for a few years, you will be concerned that academic programs provided here are challenging and rigorous. We offer the International Primary Curriculum, a program tailor-made for international schools and widely implemented around the world. Students graduating at age 18 may leave with either our accredited American High School Diploma or the world-renowned International Baccalaureate Diploma. The IB Diploma is a demanding curriculum of exceptional academic challenge and, as such, is esteemed by universities in the United States, United Kingdom and around the globe as a college preparatory course second to none.
Although academic challenge is, rightly, at the center of all we do at AISR, we pride ourselves on our commitment to an education which values the whole person. Sports and athletics are seen not merely as an “add on” but as instilling values of character and fair play. The Rotterdam Sharks are small in number but mighty in spirit and we can give everyone who wants to the chance to play for their school. Our High School athletics program is exceptional in the variety and opportunity it gives to students, who are to be found sailing, horse-riding or mountain-biking as the seasons allow.
The Arts are also well catered for. We place special emphasis on community singing with our Middle School choir and there are opportunities to perform in demanding Drama for this age group and for High Schoolers.
We give special emphasis to our duty as an international school by participating in the Global Issues Network of schools. Activities such as our Hunger Lunch or the 2009 Rotterdam Conference on Water make real our commitment to internationalism and allow students to gain a far deeper awareness of the challenges which beset our world, challenges which our globally-aware student body will need to tackle as the leaders of tomorrow.
There is a lot of wisdom in what Albert Einstein had to say about education. As there is in so much of what the great man taught us. One thing is certain, though, there will be plenty at AISR for you and your child to remember.
