The American International School of Rotterdam

is an independent, non-sectarian, non-profit, coeducational day school that offers a quality educational program from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities with a desire to learn in English. The School was founded in 1959. The school year is comprised of two semesters extending approximately from Mid-August to Mid-January and from Mid-January to Mid-June. The school is located in the north-eastern part of Rotterdam in the attractive suburban area of Hillegersberg.

Organization: 

The School is governed by an 9-11 member Board of Trustees, appointed for 3-year terms and operating under the auspices of the Stichting (foundation), The American International School of Rotterdam.

Curriculum:

AISR provides a full range of instruction from Pre-Kindergarten (age 3) through High School. The curriculum is that of U.S. College preparatory private schools. Instruction is in English. French (3-12), Spanish (6-12) and Dutch (PK-12) are taught as foreign languages. Computer, art, drama, music, physical education, library classes and swimming are taught by specialists. An intensive English as a Second Language program (ESL) is also offered. The Early Childhood and Elementary Schools offer the widely renowned International Primary curriculum (IPC). The high school offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. The School was reaccredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and by the European Council of International Schools in 2000. The School is a member of Northwest European Council of International Schools (N.E.C.I.S.) for sports, science/art fairs, and other student activities as well as European Council of International Schools (ECIS) for teacher/staff development.

Faculty:

There are 40 full-time and 8 part-time professional faculty members in the 2008-2009 school year; including 20 U.S. citizens, 6 host country nationals and 14 persons of other nationalities. There are an additional 13 employees consisting of administrative and support staff.

Enrollment:

Enrollment at the opening of the school year 2008-09 was 238. There are over 33 nationalities represented within the student body.

Facilities:

The purpose built facility and campus for 500 students was completed in April, 1995 and the school became part of Rotterdam's International Education Center (IEC). The school has 45 instructional areas, 3 science labs, a sports complex (including sports fields, double gymnasium, rented pool), multimedia center, cafeteria, and is computer networked. A new wing was added during the spring of 2003.

The International Educational Center is composed of two parts: AISR and JSR. JSR is the Japanese School of Rotterdam who use a portion of the building's facilities. Common areas are shared by both schools. There is a cooperative spirit in the IEC. AISR and JSR sharing the same facility has brought a unique dimension to the term international education.

Finances:

In the 2010-2011 school year the main source of income will be the regular day school tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows:

There is a one time capital fee of € 3,650* and an annual registration fee of € 1,020.

* The Capital Assessment Fee is not applicable to students in Pre-Kindergarten One, but becomes payable as soon as the pre-kindergarten one student enrolls in pre-kindergarten two.
** A pre-payment of a non-refundable deposit will be required to secure a place in the Pre-Kindergarten One Full Day and Half Day programs (once admission is granted).
