Middle School Exploratory – Art

The overall objectives of the Middle School Art course are both:

1) Personal - to inspire interest and curiosity in children, to place the work within a meaningful context for them and to generate responses to the ideas and problems presented by a theme or project.

2) Technical - to develop the understanding of those visual elements that reveal the appearance of the world: color tone, pattern etc. and the understanding of different forms of visual response.

The course is based upon investigation of the Elements and Principles of Design and how artists have developed their ideas and approaches to the subject. This in turn directs the work of the students towards producing well-developed artwork of their own. The course incorporates techniques of working from both observation and imagination alongside which, students develop skills of critically analyzing both their own work and the work of others. Each student has a sketchbook, which they work in both in class and at home.
