The Curriculum

What do we mean when we speak about the "curriculum"? The curriculum is the complete academic program of study offered by AISR.  We consider it the master “blueprint” for student learning.  Learning is the at the core of daily life in school and we use the curriculum as our guide to achieving success for each individual student.

In developing and reviewing the curriculum, we ask ourselves three key questions:

  • What knowledge, skills and key concepts should students be learning? (content and standards)
  • What evidence will be gathered and used to ensure that students learn? (assessment practices and tools)
  • What experiences will be used to ensure that students learn? (instructional practices and tools)

Curriculum Review & Development

What is curriculum review? Think of an audit for which there is an inspection or examination of a building or other facility to evaluate or improve its appropriateness, safety, efficiency, or the like.  We follow a similar process for our curriculum with regard to educational "best practice" and consider the following when a subject is "under review":

  • Standards, benchmarks and assessment
  • Current student population
  • School philosophy and mission
  • Subject-area philosophy and mission
  • Resources and
  • Curricular design

The work we do in curriculum review and development is designed to help students learn and be successful in school.  As we want all students to achieve their full potential, we need to plan how to make it happen, focus our efforts where the impact is greatest and measure our progress.

As professionals, one of the most important things teachers do is to work constantly at improving their level of professional practice.  We focus on continuous professional growth which contributes to success of the school and reveals the direct correlation between teacher success and the success of the students in the classroom.

We invite you to review AISR's Curriculum Review and Development Cycle.
