Elementary School Philosophy
The Elementary School program aims to provide an educational environment in which children are challenged to meet the highest standards of achievement appropriate to their relative individual stage of development. Recognizing the uniqueness of each child, the school is committed to teaching knowledge, skills and processes that will prepare each of them to function effectively in a rapidly changing world.
The core academic
subjects of Language Arts (English), Mathematics, Science and Social
Studies are taught by classroom teachers coming from a varied
background of countries and educational experiences. Students are
assigned to individual classrooms, which are organized heterogeneously.
Allowances are made for grouping individuals in basic skills areas as
determined by level proficiency.
AISR uses the
International Primary Curriculum (IPC), a
“world class, brain-friendly, comprehensive and practical curriculum,
delivering subject, personal and international knowledge, skills and
understanding.” The IPC provides the support teachers and students
need to help primary and elementary children learn as 21st century
international citizens. The IPC focuses on academic and personal
development, and the development of a global awareness. Learning is
active and engaging, and, above all meaningful to children.
In
addition, students’ learning experiences are enriched by specialists in
Dutch (French or Dutch in grade 3-5), computer studies, music, art,
library, physical education, and English as an Additional Language
(EAL). The faculty encourages students to be critical thinkers and
independent, life- long learners who value and respect the variety of
different cultures represented in the school community. The academic
curricula are supplemented by special events and field trips in the
Rotterdam area as well as throughout The Netherlands. An After-School-
Activity Program offers further opportunities to develop areas of
personal interest.
