About the Library

The library and its staff are an essential component to the academic program offered at AISR.  The librarian works with the entire student community, from Early Childhood through 12th grade.  The library collection consists of nearly 17,000 items, including books, magazines and audio-visual materials (DVDs, books on CD, etc.).  Online resources include an encyclopedia and a news database.  Collection development is an on-going collaboration between the librarian and the teachers.

Student Use

Children in pre-K2 and kindergarten visit the library once a week for 30 minutes, primarily for storytime, though they also learn the basics of what a library is.  Grades 1 through 5 come once a week for 45 minutes.  Their library sessions include a mix of reading and standards-based library instruction utilizing Standards and Guidelines for Strong School Libraries published by the California School Library Association.  The purpose of the library program for the Elementary School students is twofold:  to encourage the development of a lifelong appreciation for books and reading, and to develop the skills necessary to find, evaluate and use information wisely.

Elementary pupils usually exchange books during their library period, but they may also do so at any other time.

Students in grades 6 and up come to the library on an as-needed basis.  Typically the classroom teacher and the librarian schedule library visits to coincide with the start of a research project.  More library or classroom sessions may follow during the course of a project.  The librarian’s focus is to further develop research skills with a strong emphasis on critical evaluation of web-based resources.

Secondary School students may check out books at any time.

The Library and the IB Program

The librarian works with the IB Coordinator, teachers, and candidates themselves to locate resources appropriate to the demands of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, especially with regard to Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay.  IB candidates are shown how to access a vast wealth of materials, via both the Rotterdam Public Library and the Picarta national network of libraries in The Netherlands.
