Meet the Team

Coaches Report

16.05.2011

Last week, the AISR JV Softball team continued its march towards the NECIS tournament.  On Tuesday, the Sharks played host to the International School of Antwerp JV team and scored their first victory of the year 11-9.  It was a close nail-biting affair, which came down to the final pitch.  Once again, ace hurler Seong Hyuk delivered a strong performance on the mound.  The team played strong defence behind him, especially in the infield, led by Nico at shortstop.  The outfield let a few balls get by them, but when it mattered, in the top of the 6th with a two-run lead, facing a bases loaded, two out situation, Marianne came up with a huge catch in right-field to preserve the victory.  On Friday, the team travelled to Amstelveen to face a varsity/JV team from the International School of Amsterdam.  Facing older, more experienced players increased the challenge, but the Sharks did not back down.  The challenge was even greater because the coaching staff decided to use this contest to scout for a second pitcher.  As a result, four different pitchers – Brian, H.G., Nadine, and Goo -- took the mound and performed quite admirably against some potent hitters.  The final score was 11-4 for Amsterdam, but the Sharks continued to gain confidence as a unit in preparation for the NECIS tournament which beings on May 20.

The Sharks JV Softball team got a good start on the season in their first game against Antwerp.  On the road, against the defending league champion, in game number one was a tough assignment for any team, but Antwerp threw in an additional obstacle by suiting up experienced varsity players against the in-experienced (for now) Sharks.  The Sharks held their ground, eventually succumbing to Antwerp 12-21, and made it clear that there is vast potential in this 2011 squad.  Most importantly, the young Sharks squad settled the question of who would be their main pitcher for this season.

Freshman hurler Seong Hyuk answered all questions by pitching 6 innings without surrendering a walk.  That is an outstanding performance for someone who was told he would be pitching for the first time only two days beforehand, and that kind of consistency promises to keep the Sharks competitive against any opposition this season.  The offense shined as well.  Several hitters contributed multiple hits and a few extra base hits as well.  Again, in this instance, questions were answered: because it is now clear that the Sharks squad is fully capable of putting big innings together and getting runs on the board behind a sturdy defence that will only be stingier by the time the NECIS tournament rolls around.
